A group of residents along the Lerderderg River in Darley are banding together to improve their patch.
Why we do it
The area is a beautiful natural habitat which has been neglected for years. We want to improve this space, in a manageable fashion, in the hopes that we can get it to a place where it will become self-sustaining, apart from minimal maintenance.
Our Big Why
To create a space that is visually appealing, safe and can be enjoyed by the community and visitors to the Lerderder River Links Track
Vision
To remove flood debris while retaining some for wildlife habitat
To eradicate rabbits so that new plantings will have a better chance of surviving
To eradicate weeds to allow for new plantings
To create informal paths for humans to access the river
To plant the area using indigenous, native, bird attracting, hardy specimens
To begin in a small area and work our way out in project stages
Problem Statement
The reserve:
Is uncared for (except by neighbours)
Is unattractive
Has a lot of flood debris
Has had a large, remote control machine slash bushes down, leaving partial bushes, stumps and a trail of debris on two occasions over the last two years
Is covered in weeds (should we list a few?)
Has an abundance of pests (rabbits and foxes)
Is impacted by water diversion, causing the river to go dry or extended dry periods and therefore impacting the ecosystem
